Casting my mind back almost 20 years to becoming a mother for the first time, I remember suddenly being exposed to a hellish world of primary-coloured plastic. The playgroup offering at the time was pretty bleak, with parents having to make the tough decision between spending family time in gaudily-decorated church halls or among the vomit-scented ball pits of corporate soft play centres.
